Andhra Pradesh government has issued land acquisition notices to about 14,000 acres of land for Machilipatnam port development. Out of this about 2280 acres are for the actual port development while the rest 12, 140 acres is for industrial development corridor around the Machilipatnam port.
This land acquisition has been a contentious issue with many questioning the huge extent of land that is sought to be acquired. While there are both pros and cons, the most important part for the government is to go out of the way and explain to people, particularly to the farmers whose land is sought to be acquired, on the overall necessity of this extent of land.
The importance of Machilipatnam port can not be overstated. It will be the closest port to capital Amaravati as well as the planned industrial cluster at Donakonda and can play a huge role in spurring industrial development in the vicinity. It will also be the closest port to all exporters from Hyderabad and Telangana. In fact Telangana will be very happy with fast development of Machilipatnam port and AP too can derive benefit from Telangana exporters by offering logistics, cargo and warehousing services.
