In 2014, after the bifurcation when AP was on the lookout for a suitable location for hosting the Capital city, Donakonda in Prakasam district was very much in race. Its biggest advantage was the availability of government land of around 50,000 acres. It was also centrally located, was very close to Rayalaseema and Kurnool ( less than 100 kms away) and was widely seen as a choice that would be more acceptable for Rayalaseema citizens than even Vijayawada.
As history will have it, Donakonda lost the race to Amaravati. But has Donakonda lost its opportunity to have a tryst with destiny?? Certainly not. Factors like large scale availability of government land, proximity to capital city Amaravati and determination of the state government to transform it into an industrial hub are now beginning to show soem difference.
- A few days back AP has announced signing one of the largest memoranda of understanding with China’s Association of Small and Medium Enterprises for a building materials and logistics industrial park spread over 10,000 acres at Donakonda, involving $6.4 billion (approximately Rs 36,889 crores) in three phases. The memorandum of understanding was signed by a team of delegation led by AP CM Naidu in China. The proposed industrial park would provide employment to at least 55,000 persons.
- Applus+, a Spanish company and one of the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification companies, plans to invest about Rs. 2,000 crore in Donakonda too.
- In a move to make the region an industrial hub, the state government has decided to connect Donakonda area with Chennai-Kolkata national highway-16 with four-lane roads.
Let us hope Donakonda will have a bright future and help in the much-needed industrialization of Andhra Pradesh.
