Naidu’s Davos visit and his subsequent interactions with global business leaders has been quite successful. In the process Naidu can be credited to have unveiled a template on how state governments can overcome their sub-ordinate position to the centre and make an independent pitch for investments.
Take for example, his meeting with Mr Baba Kalyani of Bharat Forge. Bharat forge is one of the few companies in the country which has excelled in achieving global quality and scale in manufacturing. But, as it goes further up the value chain, its eco-system requirements and the expectations and need of collaboration with government becomes further refined. Just look at how the entire discussion with Chandrababu Naidu went about. This is a classic case of a business head and a government head working in tandem for industrial development.
During the meeting, Baba Kalyani said that they are interested in investing in AP in three areas. Kalyani explained that a prerequisite for developing missile manufacturing units is the eco system around it such as a centre which will allow frequent testing which is closer to an airport. He said such centres require Permission from Airports Authority of India (AAI) and state government and requested for facilitation of such permissions. He said that they are interested in manufacturing wind energy generation equipment. He said that they are the best in the world in automobile forging. Kalyani assured that their announcement or investment will attracts tens of other auto component and auto manufacturers. Bharat Forge will propagate the idea of investments in AP in the auto manufacturing community. Kalyani also agreed to support skill Development as they have the required expertise. CM Naidu, on his part, while expressing his consent to work with AAI also suggested that Ananthapur or Kurnool would be suitable for defence technologies, Krishnapatnam – Yerpedu – Tirupathi for investments in auto components manufacturing since it has a port which is required for exports, an ecosystem of auto manufacturers in Sri City near Chennai.
I am sure that Baba Kalyani would have been delighted with Naidu and the day when Bharat Forge invests in Andhra may not be very far.
