The country has witnessed many stars so far in many sports and games. Be it cricket, Tennis, hockey, Chess or so many other field and board games, several Indians did very well for themselves and brought fame to their country. But count how many of them continued in the game, not for themselves, but to train the next generation to reach even bigger heights. Hardly anyone !!
Indian sportstars do not believe in giving back. In India’s most popular game, cricket, we have seen several players attain great heights of fame and make lots of money. Some of them went on to become administrators, commentators but offer only occasional advise to the present players. Most of that advise is also routed through columns in newspapers and magazines for which they get paid. That is the irony of Indian sports. Nobody really believes in giving back !!
In that dismal scenario, Pullela Gopichand is the rare shining star. Indian Badminton owes its success primarily to him. Every current badminton player who won any important title will have to salute “Gopi Sir”. Because it is he who taught them the ropes. Whether it is Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth, Parupalli Kashyap or score of other emerging stars, Gopichand’s hand is the driving force.
We at Andhra Nation salute him. He is the true star of Indian Badminton. And if other sports can find their own Gopichands, Indian sports will soon become world class.
